The MSDH Syphilis Task Force is surveying medical providers in Hinds, Rankin, Jones, Forrest, De Soto, and Harrison Counties to determine their capacity for syphilis testing to help combat the state's growing syphilis epidemic.
Mississippi currently ranks 5th in syphilis and 6th in congenital syphilis nationally. Congenital syphilis is now a cause of infant deaths contributing to the state's infant mortality rate, currently the highest in the nation. State Health Officer Dr. Dan Edney has declared syphilis a state health emergency.
Mississippi essentially eradicated syphilis in the 1990s. With your help we can again bring syphilis under control.
