Special Microbiology

The Special Microbiology Section performs cultures and susceptibilities on various clinical samples. Parasitic exams and rabies testing are also conducted. This lab works closely with the Office of Epidemiology in infectious disease and foodborne illness outbreaks. This section also assists with the identification and detection of bioterrorism agents using conventional microbiological methods.

Technology

Conventional culture methods are used for the isolation of bacteria. The Vitek 2 system is used for identification and susceptibility of bacteria. Other overnight identification systems are also on hand. We follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Protocol for rabies testing. This section works closely with the Diagnostic Parasitology Division Program (DPDx) at CDC for real-time identification of parasites.

Detailed, current information on available testing, and guidelines for ordering, collection, transport, and submission of specimens is available in the Laboratory Services Guide. All requests for clinical testing must be made by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner.
