The 2019 Biosafety Preparedness Exercise evaluated risk assessments prepared by Mississippi hospital and veterinary laboratories using an assessment tool provided by the Mississippi Risk Assessment Work Group.
On July 19, 2019, the Mississippi Public Health Laboratory (MPHL) announced the 2019 Biosafety Preparedness Exercise for Mississippi hospital and veterinary laboratories, which followed the first exercise conducted in 2018. The 2018 exercise was introduced by explaining that recent events such as Zika in the United States and Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia have called attention to the importance of biosafety and biosecurity in laboratories around the U.S. During 2018, the MPHL provided onsite visits, webinars and conference calls to train Mississippi laboratory participants in using the risk assessment tool, developed by the Mississippi Risk Assessment Work Group. For the 2019 exercise, laboratories were asked to choose any laboratory method performed in their laboratories and to submit a risk assessment using the risk assessment tool. The completed risk assessments were submitted to Vicki Williams, our state's Biosafety Subject Matter Expert (or Biosafety Outreach Officer).
The Mississippi Public Health Laboratory wishes to thank the laboratories who participated in the 2019 biosafety preparedness exercise. Congratulations to our Mississippi Biosafety Champion Laboratories!
Facilities participating in the 2019 biosafety exercise include:
These exercises assessed each facility's ability and dedication to safely handle unknown, highly infectious agents in its laboratory for a potential real-world outbreak. Each Biosafety Champion has helped strengthen our state's biosafety and biosecurity practices to ensure that we are prepared to evaluate the risk of any unknown biothreat.
The MSDH wishes to thank the laboratories who participated in the Mississippi 2019 Biosafety Preparedness Exercise and commend our Biosafety Champion laboratories.
