Complaint
Received complaint via telephone from a consumer who says she purchased the pre-packaged, Wal-Mart brand "original potato salad", on Saturday morning (11-13-2010). She says that after grocery shopping, she and her husband went straight home, put the groceries away and went back out to run some additional errands. Around 7pm that evening, only her husband ate the potato salad along with some crackers. By 2am he was up with nausea and vomiting and was rushed to the ER by his wife. The caller says the doctor took a stool sample and determined that her husband had received food poisoning from the potato salad he ate on Saturday evening.

InvestigationHistory
11/15/2010: Caller complains that her husband developed a food borne illness after consuming pre-packaged potato salad that was purchased at Wal-Mart Deli. 11/16/2010: Inspector performed a full risk based inspection at facility. No critical violations were observed during this inspection. All hot and colding temps were in compliance. After interviewing deli staff, inspector found that the pre-package Wal-Mart brand potato salad comes to the store already made and packaged. It is not made or packaged in this store which means regulation and recall for these foods would come from the FDA. The ambient air temp of the open front, reach-in cooler where the pre-packaged potato salad is held was at 40 degrees F during the inspection. The staff said that the pre-made salads come in shipments of six and at this time there were only two left on the shelf. The health dept. has not been made aware of any other illnesses related to potato salad purchased from this store.
